Elspeth Reid

Elspeth Christie Reid's first degree was in languages, and she graduated in law from the University of Edinburgh in 1983. She practised law in Edinburgh for a time, qualifying as a solicitor, before joining the staff of the University of Edinburgh in 1987. At Edinburgh she teaches the law of delict, criminal and property law, and has particular responsibility for the administration and teaching of the comparative law course. In addition to coordinating a series of exchange projects with Russian universities, she is the author of various articles on Russian law and was the editor of the interdisciplinary Edinburgh Essays on Russia, published in 2000. She has published extensively in comparative private law and has contributed to various international collaborative projects such as the Common Core research project based at the University of Trento, Mixed Jurisdictions Worldwide, the study of mixed legal systems edited by Vernon Palmer and published by Cambridge University Press in 2001, and Mixed Legal Systems in Comparative Perspective: Property and Obligations in Scotland and South Africa edited by Reinhard Zimmermann, Danie Visser and Kenneth Reid (forthcoming). She will shortly complete a volume on Personal Bar and Waiver (Estoppel), written with John Blackie of the University of Strathclyde, commissioned by the Scottish Universities Law Institute. She is Editor of the Edinburgh Law Review.
