Gainan Avilov studied law at the Moscow State Institute of International Relations (Faculty of International Law). He completed his post-graduate studies at the Chair of International Private Law and Civil Law of that Institute in 1990. He also took a training course on International Trade Law and EC Law at the T.M.C. Asser Institute (The Hague) in 1991-1992. From 1986 he has been working as a research associate at the Institute for Legislation and Comparative Law (Moscow), where he has kept a part-time assignment up to now. In 1992, Gainan Avilov served as a legal assistant to the Joint EC-CIS Task Force on Legal Reform in the CIS countries (Brussels). During the last decade, he has been closely involved in legislative work, being a member of the official Russian Civil Code Drafting Commission and having participated in the preparation of some other major Russian and CIS enactments. At present, he is Deputy Chairman of the Board of the Research Center for Private Law, attached to the RF President, and arbitrator at the Arbitral Tribunal of the Russian Chamber of Commerce and Industry. Since 2000, Gainan Avilov has also been appointed Listed Arbitrator at the International Commercial Arbitration Court attached to the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of the Russian Federation, since 2001 Listed Arbitrator at the Arbitral Tribunal of the Russian Joint-Stock Company ‘Unified Energy Systems of Russia’ and since 2003 Listed Arbitrator at the Arbitral Tribunal attached to the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Kyrgyzstan (Bishkek). In 2002, he became Correspondent Member of the UNIDROIT (Rome). He also teaches at the Russian School of Private Law, where students can obtain a master’s degree in private law.
