ABSTRACT

THE TENSIONS BETWEEN LEGAL, BIOLOGICAL AND SOCIAL CONCEPTIONS OF PARENTHOOD IN ENGLISH LAW

Today, in England as elsewhere, it has become increasingly common for children to be born or to be brought up in families where they may be biologically unrelated to one or, even, both parents. This paper first highlights the existing tensions between different conceptions of parenthood which have resulted from this situation and then focuses on current trends in the concept of parenthood in English family law with special attention being paid to the impact of human rights on the parent-child relationship.
