K. (Katharina) Boele-Woelki (Utrecht University)

Katharina Boele-Woelki was born in 1956 in Baden-Baden. She studied law at the universities of Göttingen and Berlin. A fellowship of the Deutsche Akademische Austauschdienst enabled her to prepare her thesis at the T.M.C. Asser Institute in The Hague on Dutch international family law, which was completed in 1982. From 1982 to 1992, she worked as a research officer at the private international law department of the T.M.C. Asser Institute. In 1990, she started teaching private international law at Utrecht University, where she was appointed Professor of Private International Law and Comparative Law in 1995 and, in 2002, Professor of Family Law. Katharina Boele-Woelki is chair of the Commission on European Family Law, chair of the Organising Committee of the World Congress on Comparative Law, which will take place in the Netherlands in 2006 under the auspices of the International Academy of Comparative Law, member of the board of the Dutch Association of Comparative Law, member of the editorial board of the Dutch Journal of Family and Child Law and member of the board of the International Law Institute (The Hague). From 1995 to 2001, she was one of the two editors of the series Molengrafica, in which she published regularly in the field of international contract law, and since 2002 she has been one of the editors of the European Family Law Series, which was established upon her initiative. She is also a member of various associations, such as the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Völkerrecht, the Dutch Association of International Law as well as the Wissenschaftliche Vereinigung für Familienrecht. In Utrecht, she teaches comparative law, private international law, family law and German law.
